History of SWC

West Bengal State Warehousing Corporation was set up in 1958 under The Warehousing Corporation Act, 1962, and has been fulfilling the objective of providing ideal and scientific storage facilities for agricultural produces and inputs like cereals, oil seeds, jute, fertilizers etc. and notified commodities like industrial equipments, chemicals, construction materials etc. through a network of different category of warehouses throughout the State of West Bengal at affordable rates.

WBSWC has two shareholders – Government of West Bengal and the Central Warehousing Corporation, with 50% shares each.

The Board of Directors consists of the Managing Director and ten other Directors, out of which five are nominated by the Govt. of West Bengal and the remaining five are nominated by the Central Warehousing Corporation.

Since inception, the administrative control of the organization was vested with the Dept. of Agriculture, Govt. of West Bengal. During early 1970s, the same was transferred to the Dept. of Public Enterprises, Govt. of West Bengal and w.e.f February, 2014, the administrative control of the organisation has been transferred to the Dept. of Food & Supplies, Govt. of West Bengal.

After the transfer of administrative control of WBSWC from the Dept. of Public Enterprise to the Dept. of  Food & Supplies, the infrastructure in respect of storage capacity has increased several times. Prior to shifting of administrative control, total capacity of WBSWC was 2.12 Lakhs M.T. (approx.). But, at present, the total capacity has enhanced to 8.62 Lakh M.T. (approx.), i.e., an increase of 6.5 Lakh M.T. (approx.).
