One of the principal objectives behind the creation of WBSWC was to provide scientific storage facilities to farmers so that the need to sale their produce immediately after harvest (when prices are low on account of large supplies) is avoided and bank credit can be availed against the stored produce.
The principal commodities stored by WBSWC at their warehouses can be classified into four broad groups as follows:
The key functions of WBSWC as follows:
1) Acquiring and building godowns and warehouses at select locations within the state with prior approval of the CWC.
2) Operating warehouses in the state for storage of agricultural produce, seeds, manures, fertilizers, agricultural implements and notified commodities.
3) Arranging facilities for transport of agricultural produce, seeds, manures, fertilizers, agricultural implements and notified commodities to and from warehouses.
4) Acting as an agent of the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) or the Government for the purposes of the purchase, sale, storage and distribution of agricultural produce, seeds, manures, fertilizers, agricultural implements and notified commodities.
The Corporation at present has also actively diversified its activities to some related areas such as Clearing and Forwarding Services, Handling and Transport Services, Logistic Services, Fumigation, Pest Control, Disinfestations Services, and Renting of office spaces and accommodations.
WBSWC provides Pest and Rodent Control and Disinfestations Services to customers according to their demands. Some important Government premises/offices which are presently covered under the said services are as follows :
H&T services are provided as part of warehousing operation to some customers like fertilizer companies, if requested by them. WBSWC provides H&T services through enlisted H&T contractors, who are selected on the basis of competitive rates through a tendering process. H&T service comprises the following activities:
